Steve, Hamburger Union is awful. Next time go to Gourmet Burger Kitchen, the best burger you will eat in the UK by a country mile.

Charlene is correct about Hamburger Union's place in London's burger bar hierarchy.

Unfortunately, Steve's not wrong about Britain's strange ability to completely muck up something as cheap, simple and good as a hamburger. A case in point; last weekend, I ordered a burger at a smartly done-up pub in well-off village in Cheshire. When it appeared it was obvious that the lovingly hand-formed patty had been rather ferociously DEEP FRIED. The meat - cooked to the colour of a well-aged leather sofa - oozed fat from the fryer instead of lovely, luscious beef juices. I'm shuddering as I remember it.

GBK is a step in the right direction, but there's still a way to go.

Julianne your comment reminds about the funny story Paul Richardson tells in his great book , "Cornucopia" about people buying breaded and deep fried haggis in Glasgow. Yuck.
